Panama Joins Andean
Community
Panama and the Andean
Promotion Corporation (CAF)
signed an agreement
making official full
membership of that
country to the
organization of the
Andean Community of
Nations.
This step received
praise by CAF president,
Enrique Garcia, who
pointed out that it
strengthens the
conviction that Panama
will play a role joining
the processes of
integration of Latin
America.
Panamanian president,
Martin Torrijos, assured
that Panama and the
Andean nations have
cause for optimism.
The time has come to set
down the hopes of
achieving a country with
equal opportunities and
a future of sharing and
prosperity, he said.
Torrijos and Garcia
noted the importance of
working together to
finance the Project of
amplifying the Panama
Canal with resources of
up to 500 million
dollars.
Garcia also noted that
the future installation
of a regional CAF
headquarters in Panama
to continue in its role
of integration with
South America, Central
America and the
Caribbean.
The Minister of Economy
and Finances, Hector
Alexander, and Garcia
signed the agreement.
The agreement stipulates
12,014 CAF actions
valued at 14,500 each
for a total amount of
179 million dollars and
agreed that payment
would be staggered
during a period of six
years to cover the
amount in its totality,
the official note
explained.
