Jobless Hondurans Return
from US
Honduras migration
authorities estimated
that over 70,000
deportees will arrive
from the
recession-stricken
United States by the end
of 2008.
The director of the
Migration Institution,
Armando Castillo,
explained that since
January, 2008, US
authorities have rounded
up and returned 18,563
persons.
Castillo explained that
companies that had
previously used Central
American manual labor
are not doing so now as
a result of the economic
recession in the US, one
of the causes of growth
in number of deportees.
Last year, 69,000
deported Hondurans
returned by air and
land, according to
official reports.
Since 1997, 133,343
deportees returned by
air and 246,273 returned
by land, Castillo added.
The official affirmed
that deportations have
increased. Now daily
flights from the United
States land in Honduras,
the country most
affected by deportations
among the nations known
as the Northern Triangle
formed also by El
Salvador and Guatemala.
