Guatemala Compensates Victims
Alvaro Colom, President of Guatemala, handed today economic assistance to 392 victims of the armed conflict in the western department of San Marcos.

Compensation totals 7,716 000 quetzals (a million dollars) and will benefit families affected by extrajudicial executions, disappearances and human rights violations during wartime.

"Let us turn the tragic page of history, not for a legal matter, not for the peace agreements, but for the love to our children and grandchildren and let us not pass this pain on new generations", said Colom.

The head of state will also hand a 700 thousand dollars economic support to 253 citizens of Solola Department, informed Prensa Latina leaders of the Peace Secretariat (SEPAZ)

This department has processed 25 thousand compensation requests and plans to address around 8 thousand of them this year.

Besides economic support, the program provides for search of those disappeared and implementation of development programs in affected areas.
