Truck Falls In Ditch,
Driver Dragged Off By
Raging Current
The family of a driver
who died in an accident
when his cement truck
left the road and landed
in a ditch are suffering
double the pain, the
death of their loved one
and the loss of the
body, as it was dragged
by raging waters of the
river following a
downpour.
The accident occurred
behind the Lizano
factory in San Antonio
de Belén, when for the
cause yet to be
determined, the truck
left the road, hit a
light post and landed in
the ditch.
Rescue workers were on
the scene within minutes
of the accident,
however, they ran into
difficulty in extracting
the body from the
tangled metal wreckage
and then were attacked
by "African bees",
having to suspend their
rescue efforts for a
while.
The rescue effort took
almost four hours,
however, crews of the
Cruz Roja and Bomberos
were unable to free the
body before a heavy
downpour began. The rain
was so intense that it
quickly filled the river
and the force of the
water dragged off the
body.
The family are asking
questions of why it took
so long for the rescue
efforts and what about
the training.
This morning some 40
members of the Cruz Roja
continue to search for
the body of the driver.
