500.000 in San José and
Cartago Without Water
For Four Days
Some 400.000 people in
San José and Cartago
began seen drops of
water coming from their
taps after almost four
days of absolutely no
water as crews of the
Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA) -
water and sewer utility-
continue with the
repairs of a water main.
The rupture in the main
occurred in the early
hours of Thursday
morning when the pipe
was damaged with an
excavator in the area of
Barrio Pitaya de
Cartago. The pipe is the
main source of water
from the Orosi aqueduct.
The problem was
aggravated when a
landslide in Cutris and
the actions of a private
contractor damaged the
same water main, this
time the damage was so
severe that repairs have
been going on for more
than three days.
The AyA asked the help
of Recope, the state
refinery, for help of
their experienced
welders to help out with
the repairs.
At first the AyA told
residents of the
affected areas that
service would be
restored within 24 hours
and that tanker trucks
would be sent to areas
to distribute water.
Friday night residents
were promised full
service by Saturday
morning. However, the
taps continue dry into
Saturday and it wasn't
until late Sunday that
some drops of water were
seen, with service
expected to be restored
completely by this
morning.
The AyA says the loss is
calculated at ˘30
million colones, that
amount representing only
lost billing and not the
cost of the repair,
which it will now go
after the contractor to
recover once the
investigation determines
responsibility.
