Country Won't Run Short
of Milk, Dos Pinos Head
Assures
The fear that the
country would be left
without milk was calmed
by the general manager
of Dos Pinos, Jorge
Pattoni, assuring that
that there will not a
shortage of supply of
milk.
Dos Pinos groups the
majority of milk
producers in the
country, who are facing
the challenge of finding
alternative ways of
feeding their livestock
and with minimal impact
on consumers of milk,
especially with the
poor.
Pattoni said that his
company is looking for
ways to bring consumers
the same quality of
product, but a little
less costly. Patttoni
said that the product
would be on store
shelves, especially in
the poorer areas, in the
coming days.
The world food crisis
has meant an increase in
the cost of basic items
like corn, which
according to Pattoni has
seen a 70% increase in
cost over the past year.
The Dos Pinos manager
said that the rise in
the cost of corn and
soya, for example, has
meant that the cost of
their products has had
to increase.
Costa Ricans, according
to Dos Pinos figures,
consume some 180 litres
of milk per person and
lower production is not
an option.
Pattoni assured that
there will not be a
shortage of milk, his
company producing some
1.1 million litres a day
of which it exports
between 250.000 and
300.000.
