Using Force on Border
Nicaraguan Army Chief

accused Colombia of
using military force to
sustain its position
that parallel 82 is the
border with Nicaragua,
in violation of a ruling
by The Hague
International Court.
Nicaraguan naval units
are remaining on guard
beyond the area Colombia
claims, as part of a
joint patrol agreement
requested by the US DEA
to fight drug dealing,
El Nuevo Diario daily
reported
Bogota and Managua have
a long-running maritime
dispute, including over
several keys in
Caribbean waters.
In a ruling in December,
the international court
ruled that the limit
claimed by Colombia is
not the common border,
the Nicaraguan military
commander explained.
He stressed that despite
its military power, the
South American nation
will not be able to
prevent Nicaragua from
gaining access to the
disputed area and called
on his fellow
countrymen, especially
fishermen, to exercise
their rights in these
waters because "these
waters are ours." |
