Venezuela Referendum May
Be Called in January
Caracas - The Venezuelan
National Assembly will
discuss after January 5
a constitutional
amendment to allow
unlimited presidential
reelection,
parliamentary sources
reported Wednesday.
The bill, introduced
yesterday by 146 of
167-seat parliament,
will be discussed for
the first time on
December 18.
After passed by the
Parliament, the proposal
will be subjected to a
referendum and if
approved, it will
eliminate the
two-mandate limit for
the Republic's
President, so Hugo
Chavez could run again
in the 2012 elections.
Interviewed on the
Venevision channel,
constitutionalist deputy
and lawyer Carlos
Escarra stated that the
second legislative
discussion will be run
after January 5. The
proposal will then be
submitted to the
National Electoral
Council, which has 30
days to call a
referendum.
Escarra also rejected
unlimited reelection be
extended to governors,
because he recalled that
regional caudillism gave
rise to wars in the 19th
century and provoked
several troubles to
Liberator Simon Bolivar.
