Minister Felipe Perez
Roque on Wednesday
called for the closure
of the prison for
terrorism suspects at
the U.S. military base
at Guantanamo and there
turn of the land on
which it was built to
Cuba's control.
The demand was made
during a forum
celebrating the 60th
anniversary of the
Universal Declaration of
Human Rights at the
Convention Palace in
Havana.
Perez Roque also
condemned the
"paradoxical" fight of
the United States
against terrorism.
"It tried to legalize
the aggression and
military occupation and
committed serious human
rights violations. It
tried to justify
economic embargoes and
coercions and tried to
impose an economic,
political and social
model upon other
countries in the
interests of the
powerful," Perez Roque
said.
He also urged an end to
the U.S. economic
embargo on Cuba, which
has last for almost half
a century.
The U.S. government has
been criticized by media
and human right groups
for holding terrorist
suspects in the
Guantanamo prison
without officially
charging them and for
using harsh
interrogation tactics on
the detainees.
