Avenida Central
Boulevard Extension
Complete
Those who participate in
the traditional "avenidazo"
that is back this year
will have even more
space to do so with the
opening of the extension
of the boulevard of the
Avenida Central, that
now runs from the Calle
9 on the east to the
hospital San Juan de
Dios on the west.
The extension to the
original portion of the
boulevard runs from the
Mercado Central to the
San Juan de Dios with
the latest three blocks
completed this week.
The extension cost the
municipality ˘134
million colones using
123.000 patio stones
covering a total of
3.417 square metres.
Johnny Araya, the mayor
of San José, said that
with the completion of
the Avenida Central
extension, the downtown
core now has four
kilometres of boulevards
or pedestrian walkways.
Araya added that the
next block of the
boulevard will be behind
the La Soledad church
that will form part of
the "Barrio Chino"
(Chinatown). For that
work, the mayor said,
the municipality will
need the approval of the
MOPT.
Araya, during the
inauguration ceremony,
confirmed that the
avenidazo will commence
on Monday as announced
and the efforts of the
Policia Municipal to rid
the boulevard of street
sellers will be
reinforced.
The news was not very
welcome by the street
vendors, many who at
times overtake the
boulevard with their
wares laid on the
walkway until police
come along. |
