Restricted Spending,
Improved Economy For
2009 Expected
The Government announced
a plan to contain
spending in 2009, given
the fact that the
country is going through
a crisis resulting
mainly from the increase
in the prices of food
and oil.
At different instances,
the message was
transmitted last week by
acting President Laura
Chinchilla and by
Finance Minister
Guillermo Zuniga.
“In the coming months,
Costa Rica will have to
engage in something
similar to pilgrimage.
We will be facing a very
steep trail”, Ms.
Chinchilla warned.
“When resources are few
and many the needs, we
must” share in all
senses, she added.
Meanwhile, the Central
Bank foresees an
improvement of the
economy next year, after
the strong adjustment
that Costa Ricans have
endured in 2008.
Central Bank chairman
Francisco Gutierrez
argues that the
restrictions that the
institution has enforced
this year will start
bearing fruit in 2009.
The measures, he
explained, are aimed at
lowering the demand of
goods and services both
locally and abroad, in
order to lower the
pressure on prices.
Also, it is expected
that the prices of
commodities, such as oil
and food, will not
increase in 2009 as much
as they have in 2008 and
that the economy of the
United States will
improve.
