Costa Rica Elected To
UPU Council
Costa Rica has been
chosen to the Council of
the Consejo de
Explotación Postal de la
Unión Postal Universal (UPU)
- the Universal Postal
Union, an international
organization that
coordinates postal
policies between member
nations, and hence the
world-wide postal
system.
The election was made
during the 24th congress
of the UP that began on
July 12 and runs until
August 12, according to
Alvaro Coghi, manager of
Correos de Costa Rica.
Established in 1874, the
UPU is the primary forum
for cooperation between
postal-sector players
and helps to ensure a
truly universal network
of up-to-date products
and services. With 191
member countries, this
specialized agency of
the United Nations
fulfils an advisory,
mediating and liaison
role, and renders
technical assistance
where needed. It sets
the rules for
international mail
exchanges and makes
recommendations to
stimulate growth in mail
volumes and to improve
the quality of service
for customers.
Each member country
agrees to the same set
of terms for conducting
international postal
duties.
