Cuban Former Diplomat
elected President of
Counseling Committee of
UNHRC
HAVANA - Cuban jurist
and former diplomat
Miguel Alfonso Martinez
was elected president of
the new Counseling
Committee of the United
Nations Human Rights
Council (UNHRC), the
Cuban daily Granma
reported Tuesday.
Martinez, president of
the Cuban Society of
International Law, will
lead the committee
during the next three
years, Granma said.
Russian jurist Vladimir
Kartashkin and Egyptian
lawyer Monna Zulfikar
were elected vice
presidents.
The counseling committee
gives advice to the
47-member UNHRC, which
was established two
years ago to replace the
UN Commission on Human
Rights.
