BOGOTA - The
screening of a video
about Operation Jaque
(Check), rescue on July
2 of 15 people detained
by the rebels, put
Colombian officials in a
bad position on Tuesday.
The video was on prime
time RCN TV network on
Monday. It thoroughly
showed the preparations
and execution of the
undercover operation,
and proved those
involved used the Red
Cross, Telesur and
ECUAVISA (Ecuadorian TV
network) symbols with
premeditation.
A few weeks ago after
the illegal use of those
symbols was made public,
President Alvaro Uribe
and Minister of Defense
Juan Manuel Santos tried
to vindicate it, and
Santos even said it had
been an unauthorized
action one of the
soldiers took.
President Uribe said the
soldier, frightened by
the presence of so many
guerrilla members of the
FARC (Revolutionary
Armed Forces of
Colombia) used the Red
Cross symbol to save his
life.
Santos told the media on
Tuesday that the army
leaked information and
described it as a
disloyal act, an act of
treason that jeopardizes
those involved in the
operation. He also said
he was unaware of the
existence of the video.
The government issued a
short communiqué where
the events were
described as serious
because members of the
Armed Forces are not
supposed to leak
