Tourism Grows in Central
America
Central America's
tourism industry
reported a 1.8-percent
increase in tourist
arrivals during the
first quarter of this
year, according to
official statistics.
A report from the
Central American Tourism
Promotion Agency (CATA)
said preliminary
statistics provided by
Tourism Ministries in
the region show that
2,687,667 travelers
visited Central America
from January to April
2008, accounting for an
increase of 47,183
vacationers more than
during the same period
in 2007, when 2,640,484
tourists arrived in the
region.
Central America's
tourism industry has
grown rapidly over the
past five years,
according to statistics
from the International
Tourism Organization, as
the region reported a
13-percent increase in
tourist arrivals in
2007.
The report says that
tourism has a large
share in the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP)
of Central American
countries.
