Honduras Unions for
General Strike
Honduran trade unions
are beginning Tuesday a
national march and a
civil strike, demanding
solutions to the rise in
basic life necessities
and fuel.
According to Luis
Alonso, undersecretary
of the United Workers
Central Office, the
actions will be
peaceful.
Central Workers Office
deputy secretary general
Benjamin Vázquez
remarked that the
demonstrations will
extend for eight hours
and will conclude at the
presidential house.
The national strike will
concentrate on
unemployment and gather
civil society
organizations, unions,
farmers, teachers, trade
unions, religious groups
and others.
The groups will demand
the derogation of the
Law on Drinkable Water
and Basic Health,
approved in 2003. They
will also push for
respect of free
unionization and
communities of
indigenous and people of
color, which are victims
of the national and
foreign managerial
