Striking Teachers Reach
Tentative Agreement
After three weeks of
striking, union leaders
of the teachers union,
the Asociación de
Profesores de Segunda
Enseñanza (APSE) and
officials of the
Ministro de Educación
Pública (MEP) met
yesterday and reached a
preliminary agreement.
However, the strike
continues.
Leonardo Garnier,
ministro de Educación,
said talks lasted for
more than six hours,
saying that the parties
agreed increasing
salaries for teachers
who have university
degrees. Those teachers
who qualify for the
increase would begin
receiving their new
salaries beginning
September 1.
Although the teachers
got most of what they
wanted in the
negotiations, union
leaders did not call off
the strike, saying that
they have to consult
with their membership
before they can do so.
The meeting was held at
the offices of the
Defensoría de los
Habitante (Ombudsman) in
Barrio Mexico.
