Ecuadorean President for
OLAS
President Rafael Correa
demanded on Friday the
creation of an
Organization of Latin
American States, a
long-standing demand to
face present challenges
as independent,
sovereign nations.
Correa spoke during a
welcoming ceremony in
his honor led by his
Mexican peer Felipe
Calderon.
The Latin America of the
21th Century must uphold
the love for freedom of
our ancestors and the
pro-independence legacy
of their heroic deeds
for our liberation, he
added.
He said it is necessary
to support Latin
American development and
integration with
absolute respect for
international law, which
is possible if we look
after national interests
without invoking
tutelage from outsiders.
He stressed that the new
Organization of Latin
American States must be
a group of independent,
sovereign nations to
protect the hopes and
demands of the peoples
and contribute to the
principles of
self-determination and
continental solidarity.
