To San José Street
Characters
The Correos de Costa
Rica (post office)
building in downtown San
José now offers more
that postage stamps and
sending and receiving of
mail, but also the
opportunity to meet some
of the "Habitantes del
tiempo" - Inhabitants of
time - in photographs.
The Correos de Costa
Rica as part of its
cultural vision program
opened its doors to
photographer Randall
Campos Muñoz and his
work of 22 photographs
depicting some the most
noted and unusual
characters of the
streets of San José.
One character is Marito
Mortadela, who can be
spotted on the Avenida
Central strumming his
small guitar; don Raúl,
known for his dapper
style; and Tango and
doña Zoila, two
characters that bring
life to the Parque
Central.
"None of the characters
can be classed as
indigents. Some sing or
play an instrument in
return for help, others
shine shoes, sell
flowers, walk the
streets or come up with
some ingenious form to
obtain money to help out
their families",s aid
Muñoz.
All the photographs are
in black & white and
printed on velvet paper
25 inches by 35 inches,
framed and accompanied
with a short biography
of the subject.
"They are persons who
have been active on the
streets of the capital
for at least 40 or 50
years and have overcome
many situations in San
José and have been able
to help their families",
said the photographer.
