Court Gives Green Light
To Cut Down Trees in La
Sabana Park
The Sala IV or
Constitutional Court has
decided to allow the
cutting down of a number
of trees in the Parque
Metropolitano La Sabana
for reasons of security
of the visitors to the
part. The decision
struck down a "recurso
amparo" (appeal)
presdented by Warner
Saborío.
Saborío appealed to the
court against the
actions by the
Ministerio de Ambiente y
Energía (MINAE),
opposing the cutting
down of trees in the
park.
The court decision
emphasized that the
MINAE action does not
violate the environment
and its objective is to
provide security for
visitors to the park. In
few words, the court has
decided to place the
security of visitors to
the Sabana park over the
environmental interests
of those opposing the
cutting down of trees.
The trees to be cut down
are old and in some
cases their physical
state is poor that
branch can fall off
becoming a danger to
visitors in the park.
