Establishes Diplomatic
Ties With Four Countries
Costa Rican Foreign
Minister Bruno Stagno
said on Friday that
Costa Rica established
new diplomatic relations
with four countries,
Uganda, Congo and
Bostwana in Africa and
Yemen in Arabia during
his 20-day Africa tour.
Stagno visited Africa to
seek support for Costa
Rica's candidacy to the
United Nations' (UN)
Security Council and to
establish new diplomatic
ties.
Stagno said in a press
conference that the
prompt opening of
embassies for each one
of these countries has
not been planned yet,
due to Costa Rica's
financial limitations,
although the convenience
of a diplomatic
headquarters to attend
to African affairs will
be considered.
Stagno said the new
relations will benefit
trade and will also
allow to coordinate
multilateral efforts
like the Doha Round for
development, in the
framework of the World
Trade Organization (WTO)
.
Stagno said Costa Rica
will study ways to help
its new allies in
resolving problems such
as HIV-AIDS by
recommending programs
that have already been
implemented in the
country.
"Costa Rica is not an
economic power to give
aid to Africa, but we
can help to allow
cooperation reach those
countries," Stagno said.
Stagno did not state the
precise dates in which
Costa Rica's government
established official
diplomatic relations
with the four countries.
