Aresep Approved Water
Rate Increase Of Only 6%
Water rates will be
going up 6% and not the
35% that the Instituto
Costarricense de
Acueductos y
Alcantarillados (AyA)
had asked the Reguladora
de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep) for.
The Aresep decision was
made public yesterday.
The regulador general,
Fernando Herrero, said
that the cash surplus by
the AyA influenced the
decision for the low
increase for this year
and next.
In addition, Herrero
said that the Aya has
increased revenues and
less expenses, according
to the regulators
calculations.
What the decision means
is that the request to
increase water rates 15%
for 2008 and 10% for
each year in 2009, 2010
and 2011 will not
happen, affecting some
537.380 users of water
services.
The basic rate for 0 to
15 cubic metres of water
consumption will be
¢2.406 colones for
residential customers
and ¢9.850 for
commercial users.
The AyA is expected to
appeal the decision in
the coming days because
it says, from its point
of view, that the
increase is not
realistic and will not
allow it to carry out it
plans for investment in
infrastructure in the
coming years.
