89.000 Vehicles Still To
Be Inspected
According to Ritve SyC,
the vehicle inspection
monopoly, some 89.000
vehicles (17% of all
vehicles) are exposed to
a ¢10.000 colones fine
by the Policía de
Tránsito for not having
passed inspection.
Riteve says that to date
529.000 vehicles were to
have been inspected but
they can only account
for 440.000.
The vehicle inspection
system is based on a 10
month period, where
vehicles are due for
inspection on the month
based on the last digit
of their license plate:
1 for January, 2 for
February to 0 for
October.
All vehicles must pass
the annual inspection to
obtain the circulation
permit known as the "marchamo"
which goes on sale by
the middle of December.
Vehicles that do not get
inspected or do not pass
the inspection cannot
obtain the marchamo and
are subject to a fine
and/or confiscation by
the Tránsito
police.
The inspection system is
for the 630.000 private
vehicles registered,
excluding brand new
vehicles which are
required to submit to
inspection on the second
year of registration.
Riteve's concern is that
the 89.000 vehicles
still to be inspected
could saturate their 16
stations causing
backlogs and long lines
for inspections.

appointment. The current
waiting time is about 10
