Costa Rican Schools
Increasingly Violent
A recent shooting that
left three students
wounded revived the
demand on Wednesday for
more control in Costa
Rican schools, where
violence is on the rise
despite constant seizure
of weapons.
The police are still
looking for the young
man who shot three
students two nights ago
in a Costa Rican high
school, where they have
installed a metal
detector to prevent
students from entering
with weapons.
According to Public
Education Ministry
statistics, almost 300
weapons, including guns,
daggers and knives were
confiscated this year in
this country's schools.
School authorities are
also demanding
permission to reinforce
night vigilance in
schools, and to hire
more guards to search
the students, their
backpacks and bags.
Education Minister
Leonardo Garnier
announced the "The Cole
in our Hands" plan
implemented in 50
schools to reduce such
violent outbreaks that
seeks to tackle violence
in different ways, using
arts, sports, civic
activities and culture. |
