Dozens Homeless From
Heavy Rain Destroying
Their Homes
The heavy rains of last
night has left dozens of
people homeless and
affecting as many as
2.500 in the areas of
Desamparads and
Alajuelita, on the south
side of San José, as the
river Cañas overflowed
its banks.
The areas hardest hit
were San Rafael Arriba
and San Rafael Abajo and
San Juan de Dios, in
Desamparados, as the
raging waters completely
destroyed dozens of
homes from Aserri to
Alajuelita, and causing
damage to many more.
The Comisión de Nacional
de Emergencias (CNE) was
forced to open to
shelters to house the
affected, who in some
cases lost everything.
Some 300 calls were
received by 911 as the
water started to rise.
In Maiqueta six homes
were swept away. In
Aserri 15 homes were
damaged and in Tabarca,
Trásnito police had to
close off roads as
mudslides affected
transit in the area.
A tropical storm is
being blamed for the
destruction as the CNE
has called for a "green"
alert for the Central
Valley and South Pacific
areas.
The green status is for
residents to be on the
alert for rising rivers
and mudslides that can
occur at any moment and
any area.
