Guatemalan President
Oscar Berger exhorted
the two candidates that
will be disputing the
presidency on November
4, and their running
mates, to carry out a
high level campaign and
put differences aside.
Berger called this
20-minute meeting, with
UNE (National Unity for
Hope) candidates Alvaro
Colom and Rafael Sword
and Patriot Party's Otto
Perez Molina and Ricardo
Castle Sinibaldi,
"historic."
In press statements,
Alvaro Colom said he was
satisfied with the
meeting since it allowed
coordination of efforts
for an orderly change of
administration.
Otto Perez Molina
considered the meeting
an important event and
announced the
appointment of the
technicians and experts
who will discuss the
most relevant topics of
the transfer of power
with each of the
government areas and
ministries next week.
Both candidates are
making contacts with the
different Guatemalan
political parties,
seeking alliances for
the second round, and
will start their
campaign this weekend.
Alvaro Colom reached
first place in the
September 9 elections
with 28.23 percent of
the votes, almost five
percentage points over
Perez Molina, who got
23.51 percent
Colom emphasizes
fighting poverty and
social topics on his
platform, while Perez
Molina proclaims he will
be hard on the growing
social insecurity in
Guatemala. |
