Tránsito Goes Hi-Tech
The Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) began
using a handheld
computer to issue
tickets for traffic
infractions, replacing
the pad.
The handheld computers
allow the Tránsito
(traffic) officials to
enter the information on
a touch pad and print
out a ticket.
The program is still
being tested during spot
checks and the tickets
issued have no effect.
The Consejo de Seguridad
Vial (Cosevi) has issued
200 of the Trimble
handheld units which
cost ¢1 million colones
(us$1.900) each.
The units, according to
Tránsito 2116, are
cumbersome and freeze up
on a regular basis as
the Windows Mobile
Operating system has to
be continually
restarted, that can take
up to 10 or 15 minutes
to issue a ticket.
The units use bluetooth
technology to connect to
the printed strapped to
the official's waist or
in patrol vehicle and
are rugged enough that
they can be run over a
vehicle of used in the
rain without fail.
The objective is that
Tránsito official at the
end of the day plugs
into the internet, in
the comfort of his home,
or at the Tránsito
delegation and download
the information to the
Cosevi mainframe. Under
the new system, a driver
can pay a traffic ticket
the following day,
rather than the
handwritten tickets
than can take days to
weeks to appear in the
system.
Although the new system
is only in the testing
phase and any tickets
issued are only a
warning, Tránsito 2116
was clear that if the
driver merits, the pad
comes out and a hand
written ticket is issued
for the infraction.
There is no decision yet
if the new system will
be adopted and when it
will go in use.
The ticket is printed on
a portable printer,
connected by bluetooth
to the hand held
comptuers. |
