More Rain On The Way As
Another Tropical Wave To
Pound The Country
If the rain of the last
twelve days was not
enough, another tropical
wave will be hitting
Costa Rica today,
Saturday and tomorrow,
Sunday.
The rain of the past two
weeks has left thousands
to be housed in shelters
as their homes have been
flooded or destroyed by
mudslides that killed a
total of 18 people.
The latest phenomenum is
expected to hit by late
tonight or tomorrow
morning, according to
Pablo Manso, director of
the Instituto
Meteorológico Nacional (IMN)
- national weather
office.
The danger is that
weather system will
bring more flooding and
is expected to hover
over Costa Rica for only
24 hours, though its
effects will be felt for
the next two weeks,
according to Manso.
The tropical wave and
the low pressure system
to follow it will hit
hard the Pacific coast
and the Central Valley,
while the Caribbean
coast will enjoy good
weather.
The hardest areas to
feel the effects,
according to the IMN is
the province of
Puntarenas and
Guanacaste.
Daniel Gallardo,
president of the
Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE), that
currently 33 cantones
are affected severely
with 30 shelters housing
a total of 2.174 people.
Nine schools have been
shut down and used as
shelters as officials
are calling the heavy
rains of the past two
weeks worse than a
hurricane.
The CNE is accepting
donations to help out in
the relief efforts.
Donations can be made
directly to the accounts
at the: Banco de Costa
Rica (BCR)- 118281-1 in
dollars and 91100-3 in
colones; and the Banco
Nacional (BN)- 911-8,
only in colones.
In addition to cash
donations, the CNE is
accepting clothing and
canned and dry foods.
Donations can be made at
any Más x Menos, Palí,
Hipermás, Maxi Mercados
supermarkets and at any
Red Cross location.
