Seven dead, 24 injured
in Brazilian bus crash
A bus with 39 people
onboard overturned early
Monday morning in
southeastern Brazil,
killing seven people and
injuring at least 24
others, federal
road police said.
The bus, belonging to
transport firm Rio Doce,
was taking passengers
from Minas Gerais state
to Rio de Janeiro state
when it left the BR116
road and plunged down a
slope in the Zona da
Mata Mineria region.
Initial investigations
showed that the vehicle
was speeding when it
went out of control.
Most passengers were
sleeping when the
accident happened,
police said.
Five passengers died at
the scene. All the
injured were taken to a
hospital in the
municipality of Alem
Paraiba in Minas Gerais.
The driver and another
passenger died in
hospital during
treatment.
Altogether, 92 have died
in accidents on federal
roads in Brazil since
Friday.
