Guanacaste Under Water
Heavy rain, flooding,
mudslides and damaged
bridges are affecting
life in parts of Costa
Rica as the country
lives through the last
weeks of rainy season,
that according to the
weatherman could last
into November.
In Guanacaste, the town
of Filadeldia, south of
Liberia is totally under
water, as residents had
to be evacuated to
nearby towns like Santa
Cruz after the Tempisque
river overflowed its
banks.
Several bridges have
been damaged, one
completely that the road
had to be closed to all
traffic, completely
choking off several
communities.
The Inter-American
highway that connects
the Guanacaste to San
José has also been
affected with blockages
in several areas, as
work crews continue
their efforts to
maintain the highway
open to traffic.

The major blockage is
near La Colina, between
San Ramón and Palmares.
Near Minas de Esparza,
southeast of Puntarenas,
is also affected.
Floods on Sunday
affected some 20
Guanacaste communities
in total, including
Filadelfia, Nandayure,
Hojancha, Nicoya, Santa
Cruz, Carrillo, La Cruz
and Liberia.

Residents whose homes
were completely damaged
were take to temporary
shelters set up by the
Comision Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) -
national emergency
commission. |
