Woman on Hunger Strike
After Immigration Will
Not Allow Entry To Her
Husband
Jenny Medrado,
a Costa Rican muslim and
resident of Alajuela,
began a hunger strike at
the doors of the ala
Constitucional
(Constitutional Court),
in protest of Migración
(immigration service)
that will not allow
entry to Costa Rica of
her husband, Marcos
Durman, who was turned
back at the airport last
Tuesday.
The woman, in the name
of Alla, says that she
married Durman, an
Argentinian national,
last February by way of
proxy.
Mario Zamora, director
of Migración, said the
refusal to allow entry
to Durman is based on
the regulation that a
"visitor" must hold a
return ticket before
allowed entry into Costa
Rica.
"The man entering as a
tourist, alleging to
being married to a Costa
Rican did not have a
ticket out of Costa
Rican when asked by an
immigration official and
simply could not be
allowed entry based on
the regulations, and
like in many other
occasions, they persons
not carrying a return
ticket are sent back to
their country of
origin", said Zamora.
Zamora added that
immigration officials at
the airport and land
border crossings do not
always ask to see a
return ticket out of
Costa Rica, the
regulation exists and
the immigration service
is well within its
rights to ask and deny
entry to anyone not
complying. |
