Shark Docs Closed
Temporarily
INCOPESCA, the Costa
Rican fisheries
institute said yesterday
it has closed all public
and private docks to
international shark
boats.
The closing order was
issued by the Ministerio
de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT),
prohibiting the landing
of shark products until
the private docks comply
with a decision by the
Sala Constitucional
(Constitutional Court).
The Sala Constitucional
or Sala IV as it is
often referred to,
ordered that both
private and public docs
provide full disclosure
and enforcement, a
measure enacted two
years prior, to curb the
illegal practice of
shark finning.
INCOPESCA says that the
closing is temporary
allowing the institution
time to prepare an
enforcement code that
will guarantee
government authorities
to have the tools to do
enforce customs,
environmental and
fisheries laws.
