Nicaraguans Anxious To
Work in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is getting
ready to be invaded by
Nicaraguans, but this
time not led by
filibuster William
Walker, but, rather
ready to provide the
necessary manual labour
that Costa Rica
desperately needs.
Some 41.000 Nicaraguans
will be landing in Costa
Rica for the season to
work in jobs in
construction and
agriculture.
The group is different
from the thousands of
Nicaraguans who
regularly come to Costa
Rica in search for work,
as they are coming in
legally, with work
permits in hand.
The Ministerio de
Trabajo (Labour
Ministry) has already
issued temporary work
permits to some 10.000
who will be picking
coffee in Costa Rica>
The rest will have to
rely on their employers
to present to the
Dirección General de
Migración y Extranjería
(immigration service)
information for each
worker, the type of work
and the time limit for
the work to obtain a
temporary entry to Costa
Rica.
Each Nicaraguan worker
is expected to deposit
with the immigration
service the sum of
us$20, the cost of
sending the foreigner
home in the event they
overstay their welcome.
The Costa Rican
consulate in Managua,
Nicaragua, is the scene
of hundreds of
Nicaraguans who visit
daily to get information
about the job openings.
The move has been
prompted by Costa Rica
authorities due to a
shortage of manual
labour in Costa Rica,
urgently requiring
construction and
agricultural workers.
