Police take control of
Argentina jail after
riot
Police in Santiago del
Estero state in northern
Argentina took over the
management of the state
jail Wednesday following
a riot in which 34
people died.
The guards in the prison
went on strike just days
after the riot, calling
for shorter shifts,
better working
conditions, more staff
and the removal of new
managers appointed after
the incident by
provincial governor
Gerardo Zamora.
The guards left the
prison in Santiago del
Estero city, 1,000 km
from Buenos Aires, under
escort by special police
and firefighters.
Also Wednesday, the
Inter-American
Commission for Human
Rights called for a
thorough investigation
into the riot to
guarantee the security
of prisoners in general
and to ensure no
recurrence of the
incident, which began
Sunday and ended Monday.
Argentina "must avoid
any repetition of such
acts of violence and
administrative
investigations and court
backup is
indispensable," it said.
