Nicaragua to US
Ambassador: "Back Off"
Nicaragua's governing
Sandinista National
Liberation Front and
opposition PLC
(Constitutional Liberal
Party) lashed out
Wednesday at meddling
statements by US
Ambassador Paul Trivelli.
Trivelli told local El
Nuevo Diario that the
inauguration of
Sandinista President
Daniel Ortega (in
January) and an alleged
accord between the FSLN
and PLC debased
democracy.
FSLN legislator Walmaro
Gutierrez urged Trivelli
to respect domestic
policy since it is the
Nicaraguans who decide
what they want for their
country and not a gringo
(US citizen) who tells
them what they should
have.
PLC Congressman
Francisco Aguirre, ex
foreign minister from
1997-2001, termed the
ambassador's comments
undiplomatic.
Yet Eduardo Montealegre,
conservative ex
presidential candidate
for Nicaragua's Liberal
Alliance, justified the
meddling and criticized
Nicaragua's close ties
with Iran. |
