Taiwan FM To Visit Costa Rica
Taiwan's foreign minister James Huang is to fly
to Central America. The trip comes amid reports
of concern over a possible diplomatic switch of
allegiance in the region to rival China.
Mr. Huang is due to depart Taipei on Monday for
a meeting with Taiwan's allies, due to start in
Belize on Friday.
The foreign ministry says topics for discussion
include crime, energy and trade.
The yearly meeting has been overshadowed by
another setback for Taipei in its bid for
membership of the World Health Organization
(WHO) last week.
Only 17 of Taiwan's 25 allies supported the bid.
Panama and Nicaragua were absent during the
voting while Costa Rica voted against the bid.
The Taipei-based China Times says Taipei has
filed a protest with Costa Rice.
It says the foreign ministry is concerned that
if Costa Rica switches its diplomatic
recognition from Taipei to Beijing, it will
trigger an exodus of Taipei's diplomatic allies.
Thirteen Central American countries recognize
Taiwan, which Beijing regards as part of its
territory awaiting reunification.
