Coffee prices down
The downward trend of coffee prices in the
international market is a source of worries for
Costa Rican growers, who have seen the price of
the 100-pound bag drop us$24.30 in the last four
months.
While in early January coffee was quoted at an
average us$126.20 per 100-pound bag in New York,
it started May at us$101.90.
Even though Costa Rica sells 40 percent of its
crop in the fine coffee market, the other 60
percent is still traded at the New York Stock
Exchange.
According to sector sources, when the price goes below us$100, Costa Rican
growers suffer losses.
