Nicaragua to End Hunger
Nicaraguan authorities are
polishing details for the
launching of the Zero Hunger
Program on Saturday, the
distinctive feature of President
Daniel Ortega s administration,
aimed at addressing poverty.
The program will be inaugurated
by Ortega who, after taking
power in January, declared his
government s top priority is to
overcome poverty affecting 70
percent of Nicaraguans.
As it was recently announced,
the Productive Food Program will
benefit 75,000 rural families in
five years, through the granting
of a bond estimated at 2,000
dollars, including a pregnant
cow and pig, poultry, seeds,
fruit plants, and other
agricultural supplies.
The idea is that each family has
milk, meet, egg, grains and the
other products included in
Nicaraguans staple diet.
The project s overall cost is
estimated at 150 billion
dollars, and will benefit 15,000
families each year.
