Central American Workers March
May 1st
Managua - International Workers
Day was celebrated in Central
America Tuesday with marches and
protests, most against CAFTA -
the free trade treaty with the
United States.
In Nicaragua workers also
marched for better wages and a
tax reform to oblige the rich to
pay more of their share.
Thousands of Salvadorans took to
the streets of their capital
today protesting unemployment,
the dollarization of the economy
and CAFTA.
Pedro Juan Hernandez, of the
Movimiento Popular de
Resistencia 12 de Octubre in El
Salvador, demanded that
President Antonio Saca create
dignified jobs and lower the
incredible 71 percent
unemployment rate.
In Honduras the Honduran Workers
Federation (CTH) led the march
protesting the high price of
fuel and basic foods.
CTH president Altagracia Fuentes
pointed out that the 20,000 wage
earners on the streets also
criticized the recurrent
corruption in President Manuel
Zelaya s administration.
We are on the streets this May
Day to demand a better quality
of life, fair salaries,
dignified work for young people,
respect for unions and in
defense of public institutions,
union leaders exclaimed.
