Second Person Charged Over
Cocaine-In-Sweets Find
A second person has been charged
with importing about 2kg of
cocaine hidden inside boxes of
sweets mailed from Costa Rica.
A 45-year-old man from Clear
Island Waters on the Gold Coast
was arrested by Australian
Federal Police (AFP) officers on
Monday.
He was charged with possessing a
marketable quantity of border
controlled drugs and one count
of aiding, abetting, counselling
or procuring to import a
marketable quantity of border
controlled drugs.
AFP allege the man received the
drugs from a 38-year-old woman
who was arrested last week and
charged with importation.
The alleged importation came to
the attention of Customs
officers in Sydney on March 7
when they intercepted a package
sent from Costa Rica to an
address in Palm Beach on the
Gold Coast.
AFP forensic experts allegedly
found four boxes inside the
package, each containing
chocolates and clear plastic
bags containing off-white lumpy
powder, which was tested and
found to be cocaine.
The officers substituted the
cocaine with an inert substance
and delivered the package to the
original address.
The man and woman appeared in
the Southport Magistrates Court
yesterday. She was remanded in
custody to reappear on June 11.
