Guatemala Land Sink Swallows Three
The National Coordinating Office for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) asked the government to declare a disaster area the place where a landsink opened and caused destruction of several houses and death of three people.

In the city s northern area, an old drainage main collapsed, opening an over-66-feet-diameter hole, 492 feet deep.

The area is very unstable and the hole has widened, thus an investigation is required to determine the potential risks, said CONRED Director Hugo Hernandez.

According to the official, there is a possibility that there were other holes in surrounding areas of the depression, due to leaks in sewers.

He asserted that the problem is that the CONRED does not have enough resources to carry out the complex study, which would allow determining if an extensive northern region of the capital is habitable or not.
