Sandinista Budget Breaks
Neoliberal Myth
The projected 2007 General
Budget presented by the
Sandinista government has put an
end to the neoliberal myth in
Nicaragua that it was impossible
to increase social expenditure
without altering macroeconomic
stability, a legislative source
affirmed Friday.
Deputy Walmaro Gutierrez said
that previous neoliberal
governments pointed out they
could not increase social
expenses because it would change
macroeconomic stability and
jeopardize the International
Monetary Fund.
“Now we show that was false, as
spending to fight poverty was
raised by us$82 million dollars,
the legislator told local press.
The new government limited to
adjust the budgetary proposal by
the previous government of
Enrique Bolaños in October 2006
to assign more funds for social
sectors, governmental sources
informed.
Gutierrez noted the adjustments
barely changed the budgetary
deficit, which increased from
0.2 to 0.4 percent, and
represented an increase of more
than 75 million dollars,
compared to the previous
proposal.
The projected budget was
approved Thursday by the
parliamentarian commission for
economic affairs.
