Electricity Price Hike
Approved
It's time to loosen the
purse strings a bit, as
electrical rates are on
the way up, following
the approval by the
Autoridad Reguladora de
Serivicios Públicos (ARESEP).
The increase is between
5% and 8.5%, depending
on the electricity
provider.
Customers who get their
electricity directly
from the Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE) will
see their monthly bills
jump by 7.92%, while
customers of the
Compañia Nacional de
Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) -
national power and light
company - a subsidiary
of ICE, will see an
increase of only 6.97%.
In areas like Heredia,
San Carlos and part of
the Guanacaste province
who are serviced by
local power utilities
will see their
electrical energy bills
jump between 5.4% and
7%.
The local utilities buy
power from ICE and
provide electrical
service to their
customers at rates
different than those
charge by ICE to its
customers.
The increase is now
waiting for publication
in La Gaceta, the
official government
publication published by
the Imprenta Nacional
(national printer),
before it can take
effect. The publication
is expected within the
coming week.
