Man Sets Fire To Hotel
After Being Rejected By
Prostitute
Furious for having been
rejected by a
prostitute, a man only
known as "Machillo",
decided to set fire to
the mattress in his
hotel room that engulfed
and destroyed the entire
downtown building known
as El Campesino hotel.
The entire structure was
reduced to ashes despite
the valiant efforts by
the bomberos
(firefighters).
The fire broke out in
room 16 of the hotel
located on Avenida 1,
between Calles 8 and 10,
when, according to one
version, the man who
occupied the room felt
rejected by a prostitute
who preferred to offer
her services to another
customer. Another
version offered to
authorities is that the
man was upset that the
linen in his room hadn't
been changed for days.
Whatever the reason, the
man decided to set fire
to the mattress, warning
the front desk manager
of a fire in his room as
he left the hotel in the
early hours of the
morning.
Due to the age and wood
construction of the
structure, the fire
gutted the building in
no time and there was
nothing for the
firefighters to do but
control the blaze so as
to no to spread to the
adjoining buildings.
At the time of the fire
there 15 people in the
hotel who were quickly
evacuated by the front
desk manager and no
injuries were reported.
The Organismo de
Investigación Judicial (OIJ)
is investigating the
blaze and are looking
for the only suspect
based on witness
accounts of the events
preceding the fire.
