Emigration Bad for Families
The
increment in emigration and sending remittances
had a positive impact on the Honduran economy,
but has increased family disintegration,
president of the Central Bank, Gabriela Nunez
confirmed on Thursday.
"That good impact influenced the stability of
the Honduran home negatively," she said,
pointing out that before 1998 most of those
abroad were single and sons of the head of the
household, but now the process has reversed.
She added that although remittances for this
nation were more than 25 percent of the GDP,
poverty affects 80 percent of the Honduran
population.
The Central Bank official said residents in the
United States sent their Honduran relatives a
billion dollars in the first five months of the
year.
In 2006 total remittances were 2.36 billion
dollars, and this year 2.88 billion is expected,
Nunez affirmed.
According to official data, about 100,000
Hondurans leave this nation illegally in search
of better alternatives.
