Salvador to Launch Anti-Gang Project
El
Salvador will present a project to fight maras
(gangs) and organized crime at the summit of
Central American heads of Government to be held
in Belize next week, Minister of Public Security
Rene Figueroa announced on Thursday.
"We will present a proposal of regional action,
including the fight against drugs and the
strengthening of police corps in the area," the
Salvadorean official told journalists.
These are the axis on which the Salvadoran
initiative, aimed at strengthening a regional
strategy in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El
Salvador, is to revolve, he added.
He announced that the summit to be held in the
Belizean capital, Belmopan, on June 28-29, will
discuss violence and insecurity generated by the
maras and the causes of their proliferation.
Gangs in Central America group between 40,000 to
250,000 members, according to Salvadorean
authorities.
