Foreign Minister May Call It Quits Over Difference With President Arias
A rumour may be confirmed today that the ministro de Relaciones Exteriores (Foreign Minister), Bruno Stagno, may hand in his resignation today to president Oscar Arias.

The motive, according to a high level government source, is due to personal reasons. However, rumours say that the resignation is based on the differences of opinion being the minister and the president on the foreign policies of the past weeks.

The news comes days after president Arias decided on an about turn on foreign policy, breaking a six year old tie with the government of Taiwan, in favour of diplomatic relations with China.

Stagno is said to feel that the president has taken to large a role in foreign relations.

President Arias has played a key role in a the Consenso de Costa Rica project that seeks to have rich countries forgive the foreign debt of lesser developed nations in exchange for their reduction in purchases of arms and spend more on education.

One of the next challenges for Arias is to obtain a seat for Costa Rica on the United Nations Security Council.

The president has also been the centre of controversy, especially his confrontations with Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega.

Up to now Stagno has supported the president's position in foreign matters and the country's international policies, though he in private he has been rumoured not to be in agreement and may have had enough and as such is calling it quits.

Stagno has a Political Studies degree from Princeton and a Political Sciences degree from the Université Sorbonne in Paris, France and speaks three languages.

Stagno has long history of representing Costa Rica internationally. His last post before taking over the Foreign Ministry was Costa Rica's Ambassador to the United Nations.
