suspends an aid program to Costa Rica
Taiwan
has suspended a US$70 million aid program to
Costa Rica after the two sides ended formal
diplomatic relations on Thursday.
Taiwan's embassy informed Costa Rica Thursday
that it was ending the cooperation programs.
Taiwan had promised to use the money to
construct a 30-kilometer road in northern Costa
Rica. It had also agreed to rebuild a hospital
that was burned down four years ago. The future
of the two projects is unclear after Taiwan
decided to cut the financial aid.
Costa Rica's president Oscar Arias said Thursday
that Taiwan's aid to his country was too little
to justify maintaining relations with Taipei
instead of Beijing. He said Taiwan should be
"more generous" if fewer than 30 countries
maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
