UN:
Honduras Far from Millennium Goals
A UN
study asserted Thursday that Honduras could fail
to fulfill its goals to reduce poverty by 2015,
as per the UN Declaration of the Millennium.
"More than 50 percent of the seven million
Honduran inhabitants live in poverty and
scarcity," the UN study pointed out.
Although the average economic need was reduced
12.7 percent between 1991 and 2006, the figures
are still distant from the 37.4 percent
internationally established.
Honduras should halve the number of people with
income under a dollar a day between 1990 and
2015, but concrete data show 60 percent of
Honduran homes survive on this, said Rebeca
Arias, of the UN System in Honduras.
"To reach our objectives, it is necessary to
implement effective policies for training and
promote new sources for study and work," she
concluded.
