July 25 Holiday To Be
Celebrate Monday
Although tomorrow, July
25, is a national
holiday - the
celebration of the
Anexión de Guanacaste
(annexation of
Guanacaste to Costa
Rica), the day off will
be on Monday July 30th.
The moving of the
holidays of April 11,
July 25, August 15 and
October 12, to the
following Monday when
they fall during the
week, is based on
article 48 of the Código
de Trabajo.
Last year, Costa Rican
president Oscar Arias,
promised the residents
of Guanacaste that the
July 25 holiday would be
celebrated on the day it
falls, after strong
opposition to the law
that was enacted the
year earlier by the
former government.
The Arias promise was to
also include Mother's
Day which is celebrated
on August 15.
However, the change has
been slow and tomorrow's
holiday , as it did last
year, will move to
Monday and so will
likely the August 15
holiday.
According to Erick
Briones, July 25 is a
legal holiday and
employees who are forced
to work on the day, in
this case Monday July
30, are to be paid
double time. The same is
true for Mother's Day,
which unless the law is
changed, will be
celebrated on Monday
August 20.
However, August 2, the
El Dia de la Virgen de
Los Angeles, is not a
legal holiday, though
may employees will be
off work, taking holiday
time or time off sick,
to participate in the
annual pilgrimage known
as the "romeria". |
